Peter Obi Proposes Dual Transmission for 2027 Elections

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announced on Arise TV on September 10, 2023, that his campaign would implement a "dual transmission" system for the 2027 general elections. This system aims to send polling unit results to both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal and a dedicated campaign situation room, ensuring traceability of declared figures.

INEC responded by reaffirming its exclusive authority to collate and announce election results, addressing concerns over opposition parties' plans to establish independent results-tracking systems. Bolaji Abdullahi, the national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), supported the initiative, stating that the ADC is also developing its capacity for independent result collation.

Experts noted the technical feasibility of Obi's proposal but highlighted challenges in execution. Legal experts expressed concerns about the potential for abuse and lack of legal basis for independent collation arrangements.

Obi's announcement follows a summit of opposition parties in Abuja on August 31, 2023, discussing potential alliances ahead of the elections.
