INEC to Clean Voter Register Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced its intention to remove double registrations, deceased individuals, and other ineligible names from the voters register in preparation for the 2027 General Election. This information was shared by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), during an interview with Nigerian Tribune.

INEC has halted the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to conduct backend processes, including the cleanup of the voter register using the Automatic Biometric Identification System (ABIS). Haruna emphasized the importance of public involvement in identifying underage registrants during the claims and objections period, which will last one to two weeks after the publication of the voter list.

He also noted that the commission is committed to ensuring that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are not disenfranchised, stating that INEC has a policy to reach out to IDP camps for voter registration.
