INEC Appoints New National Commissioner Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has welcomed the recent appointment of Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (retd) as a national commissioner, following her swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This appointment comes at a crucial time as INEC prepares for the upcoming 2027 elections.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan emphasized the importance of this strategic move, particularly given the current stage of INEC's electoral calendar. Malafa's appointment aims to restore full representation in the North East geopolitical zone, which has been without representation for years.

Her professional background includes legal practice, military service, and logistics management, which are expected to strengthen INEC's electoral planning and security coordination. Amupitan reaffirmed the commission's commitment to its constitutional responsibilities and the importance of engaging collaboratively with colleagues to ensure credible, transparent, and inclusive elections across Nigeria.

The next presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for January 2027, followed by governorship and state assembly elections in February 2027.
