Cordeiro Resigns Amid FIFA Investment Plan Opposition

Carlos Cordeiro has resigned as a senior adviser to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, shortly after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) became the third major football confederation to oppose Infantino's proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors. Cordeiro criticized the proposal, labeling it “a bad deal for football” that would “mortgage football’s future.” The AFC expressed solidarity with UEFA and Concacaf, stating that the proposal could not realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required for approval.

The AFC emphasized the importance of the FIFA World Cup, asserting that it derives its strength from the participation of all Confederations and the world's leading football nations. They warned that any proposal risking the competition's unity must be reconsidered.

The opposition from the three confederations poses a significant challenge to Infantino's plans, which require a simple majority of 106 votes from FIFA's 211 member associations for approval. If all members of UEFA, Concacaf, and AFC vote against the proposal, it would face substantial opposition.
