Waste Pickers in Lagos Demand Recognition on Workers' Day

On Workers' Day, informal waste pickers in Lagos, represented by Mr. Friday Oku, called for greater recognition and inclusion within Nigeria's waste management system.

They emphasized their daily contributions to environmental sustainability through the recovery and recycling of materials, which helps reduce pollution and supports a circular economy. However, they criticized the harsh working conditions they face, including stigma, poor income, and a lack of social protections that limit their access to healthcare and safety.

Mr. Oku urged government authorities and private sector stakeholders to recognize waste picking as legitimate work and to implement inclusive policies that integrate waste pickers into the formal waste management system.

He stressed the need for fair compensation, access to healthcare, provision of safety equipment, and financial support, asserting that sustainable urban development cannot be achieved without acknowledging the vital role of waste pickers in keeping cities clean and reducing landfill pressure.
