Rising Deaths in Sokoto Prompt Urgent Government Action

Manir Dan’iya, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State, raised concerns about the increasing death toll in the state, attributing it to a deteriorating security situation and a recent boat accident. He reported that over 100 individuals may have died in various incidents over the past 10 days, including attacks by bandits in Ungushi, Kebbe Local Government Area, and fatalities in Wurno and Silame local government areas.

The Gorau boat accident in Goronyo Local Government Area resulted in a death toll of 53. In a statement released by his media aide, Aminu Abdullahi, Dan’iya called for urgent government intervention, emphasizing that the loss of lives should not be treated as isolated incidents.

He criticized the authorities for their lack of urgency and highlighted the need for improved security measures, intelligence gathering, and emergency response systems. Dan’iya also warned that ongoing violence could impact participation in the upcoming 2027 elections.
