Refurbishment of 100-Year-Old Wasinmi Mosque in Lagos

The refurbishment of the 100-year-old Wasinmi Mosque, located on Lagos Island, is being led by the descendants of Sheik Aliu Makanjuola Alli-Balogun. Originally built in 1925 by the wealthy religious leader and philanthropist, the mosque has undergone significant renovations to blend modern architectural design with traditional elements.

The reopening ceremony is set for March 8, 2026, and will be organized by the Alli-Balogun Memory Foundation. The event will honor the legacy of the Alli-Balogun family, who have been influential in Lagos's Muslim community since the late 19th century.

Notable figures expected to attend include Alhaji Lateef Femi Okunnu, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The mosque's design incorporates sustainable materials while maintaining traditional geometric and calligraphic ornamentation, symbolizing both urban regeneration and historical preservation.
