Sokoto Journalists Trained on Conflict-Sensitive Reporting

International Alert, in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, conducted a two-day training for about 150 journalists and media practitioners in Sokoto State on conflict-sensitive reporting and responsible journalism. This initiative, part of the Resilience, Engagement, and Conflict-Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection in Sokoto State Project and funded by the European Union, aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to report conflicts accurately without escalating tensions.

Sanusi Audu, Programme Manager of International Alert, noted that participants included reporters, editors, and citizen journalists from various media platforms. The training addressed the rise of unverified information during conflicts and emphasized the media's role in either escalating or mitigating tensions.

Remikat Blessing Ayuba, Coordinator of the RECAP Consortium, highlighted findings that identified unemployment and poverty as key conflict drivers in Sokoto State. The training covered various topics, including disinformation management and sensitive reporting on gender-based violence, and included practical exercises based on real cases from Sokoto.
