Intersociety Reports Rising Persecution of Christians in Nigeria

Intersociety, a human rights organization, has issued a statement expressing alarm over the escalating killings and persecution of Christians in Nigeria. The group reported that from January 1 to April 6, 2026, there were 1,402 Christians killed and 1,800 abducted, with a significant rise in violence noted during the Easter period.

The organization claims that the situation has worsened in recent months, with attacks allegedly targeting churches and increasing numbers of displaced persons. Intersociety's chairman, alongside other officials, highlighted that the violence is often attributed to state actors, despite the Nigerian government's repeated denials of a targeted campaign against Christians.

The report indicates that 350 deaths occurred in recent weeks, and the organization identified several states, including Benue, Kaduna, Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Zamfara, Kebbi, Taraba, and Adamawa, as major hotspots for these attacks. The Nigerian government maintains that the violence is part of broader criminal insurgent activities.
