Iraq Coach Requests Postponement of World Cup Play-off

Graham Arnold, the head coach of Iraq's national football team, has expressed the need to postpone the 2026 World Cup play-off scheduled for March 31, where Iraq is set to face either Bolivia or Suriname. This request arises amid escalating tensions from the ongoing US-Israel conflict and its impact on the Middle East, particularly affecting travel logistics for players and staff.

The Iraqi airspace has been closed since February 28, following the commencement of US strikes, raising concerns about safe travel to Mexico for the match. Arnold, who became Iraq's manager in May 2025, emphasized the importance of having the best team available for this critical match, as Iraq has not qualified for the World Cup since 1986.

The Iraqi Football Federation's president, Adnan Dirjal, is reportedly working diligently to ensure that preparations are made swiftly to realize Iraq's dream of World Cup qualification. Arnold has stated that a decision needs to be made quickly to allow adequate preparation time.
