Cleric Calls for Execution of Convicted Bandits in Nigeria

Sheikh Abdulrauf Lagbaji, the founder of Tanzil Foundation, has called on the Nigerian government to enforce the death penalty against individuals convicted of banditry and kidnapping. During a lecture delivered on Ashura Day in Akure, Ondo State, he emphasized the need for decisive action to combat the growing insecurity in the country.

Lagbaji argued that the reintegration of repentant bandits into society could expose innocent citizens to further danger and urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to ensure the execution of those convicted, particularly referencing the 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo. He stated that Islamic teachings do not permit leniency towards those who commit murder and called for constitutional amendments to ensure prompt execution of guilty individuals.

Additionally, he encouraged Muslims to engage more actively in politics to improve representation and security in governance. The event was organized by the Muslim Media Practitioners Nigeria, with support from local Muslim leaders.
