Protesters Demand Senate Halt Fasina's Ambassadorial Confirmation

Protesters gathered at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, urging the Senate to halt the confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador due to serious allegations of sexual harassment. The protests were organized by a coalition of civil society organizations, which insisted that the Senate defer the confirmation until the pending court case against Fasina is resolved.

Legal practitioner Adeyemo Amira, speaking on behalf of the coalition, stressed that the protest was not driven by personal animosity but aimed at ensuring justice. She highlighted the importance of allowing the judicial process to run its course before confirming someone to represent Nigeria internationally.

Dr. Ernest Ogaz, another protest leader, argued that the Senate should reject the nomination outright, citing two ongoing court cases related to the allegations against Fasina. The coalition warned that proceeding with the confirmation could damage Nigeria's international reputation, emphasizing the need for accountability in cases of sexual misconduct.
