Japan's Shoko Kawata Makes History with Maternity Leave

Shoko Kawata, the mayor of Yawata City, Japan, has made history as the first sitting mayor in the country to take maternity leave, reigniting discussions on family-friendly policies for elected officials. At 33 years old, she is also recognized as Japan's youngest female mayor, having assumed office in 2023.

Kawata announced her maternity leave, which began on a Friday, coinciding with Yawata's Taiko Festival. Traditionally, the mayor would participate in the festival by riding atop a portable Shinto shrine, but due to her pregnancy, she opted to walk behind it instead.

Despite receiving strong support from local residents and colleagues for her decision, Kawata expressed disappointment over negative online comments following extensive media coverage. She is expected to give birth in September.

Japan ranks 118th out of 148 nations in the World Economic Forum's latest Global Gender Gap Report, highlighting the significant underrepresentation of women in Japanese politics.
