Usyk Vacates Heavyweight Titles, Opens Path for Nigerians

Oleksandr Usyk announced on Friday that he is vacating his WBA, WBC, and IBF heavyweight titles, a decision that significantly alters the landscape of the heavyweight boxing division. This announcement creates championship opportunities for three Nigerian boxers: Mose Itauma, Efetobor Ajagba, and former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua.

Usyk, who holds a professional record of 25 wins with 16 knockouts, made the announcement via a video post on social media. His decision follows a remarkable career where he became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.

The WBC picture appears clearer with interim champion Agit Kabayel expected to be elevated to full champion status. Meanwhile, Itauma and Hrgovic are set to face off on August 29 at the O2 Arena in London, with the winner potentially earning a direct shot at Kabayel.

Ajagba, currently ranked ninth by the IBF, is also in contention as the heavyweight division prepares for a new champion.
