House of Reps to Extend 2025 Capital Budget Meeting

The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency plenary session to consider extending the capital components of the 2024 Appropriations Act and the 2024 supplementary appropriations act. This urgent legislative gathering aims to provide the executive arm of government with the necessary time to implement critical infrastructure projects that would otherwise expire.

House Clerk Ibrahim Sidi confirmed the development, noting that a memorandum was distributed to lawmakers on Sunday. The special session is set to commence at 11 AM on Monday.

The leadership of the House convened this meeting pursuant to Order Five Rule 2 Sub 2 of the House's standing orders, cutting short the recess to ensure punctual attendance and form a quorum for crucial legislative business. This intervention follows a similar recent extension by the National Assembly to prevent a vacuum in the capital budget execution, aligning with the fiscal year and economic realities.

The House previously extended the implementation period for the capital components of the 2023 budget alongside the 2023 supplementary budget until June 30, 2024.
