Kano Court Affirms Journalists' Right to Protect Sources

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda, upheld the right of journalists to protect their sources, stating that disclosure is only required in matters directly linked to national security. This ruling occurred during a case involving the Dala Dry Inland Port and former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The prosecution, represented by S.O. Ekw, sought to subpoena journalist Abubakar Ahmadu Maishanu from Premium Times to provide evidence regarding allegations of defamation and cyberstalking against Ganduje.

The court affirmed that journalists should not be compelled to disclose sources unless there is a direct link to national security. The case, which has been adjourned to October 15, 2025, revolves around accusations that Ganduje converted state shares in the port to his sons' benefit, leading to Rabiu's arrest on multiple charges.
