Kano Deputy Governor Attends Maulud Amid Emirate Dispute

On Sunday, Deputy Governor Sule Garo attended the annual Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani at the palace of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. This event occurred amid a protracted dispute over the Kano emirship, with Bayero supported by a faction linked to former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, while the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has the backing of the current administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Maulud took place at Bayero's palace despite the state government's recognition of Sanusi, illustrating the ongoing traditional and political conflict in Kano. Sanusi was reinstated in May 2024 after the repeal of a law that established five emirates in Kano, which had been created under Ganduje.

Bayero, appointed by Ganduje in 2019, was directed by the Yusuf administration to vacate the Nasarawa Palace but refused, leading to a legal dispute over the rightful occupant of the throne. This division has resulted in two parallel royal establishments within the Kano Emirate.
