Kano Rainstorms Displace 4,500, Claim Nine Lives

From January to August 2026, rainstorms in Kano State resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and displaced 4,524 people across eight local government areas, as reported by Isyaku Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency. Additionally, 49 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries during this period.

The affected local government areas include Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono, and Kibiya. Windstorms and rainstorms were identified as the primary causes of these incidents, which accounted for the highest number of affected individuals among six major disasters recorded in the state.

The agency has completed assessments of the impacted areas and submitted comprehensive reports to the Kano State Government for intervention. Following these events, the Kano State House of Assembly urged the state government to provide relief materials to the victims, a resolution that followed a motion sponsored by Lawan Shehu on July 29, 2026.
