Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister, Leadership Contest Begins

Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, announced his resignation as the leader of the Labour Party, which will initiate a leadership contest to determine his successor. Starmer made this announcement outside 10 Downing Street, stating that he has asked the Labour's governing body to set a timeline for the leadership transition.

Nominations for the contest are expected to open on July 9 and close on July 16. The new leader is anticipated to take their place in Parliament when it resumes in September.

Starmer pledged to remain in office until the leadership process is concluded to ensure an orderly transfer of power. He expressed confidence that his successor would inherit a stronger and fairer country following Labour's general election victory in 2024.

Starmer became the leader of the Labour Party in April 2020, and his resignation on July 5, 2024, marks another significant change in UK leadership since 2016.
