Kenya Reports First Ebola Case and Death from DRC Returnee

Kenya has officially confirmed its first case and death from the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, linked to a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that the patient, who had resided in the DRC for about seven years, fell ill approximately one month before his death.
He traveled by road to Kampala, Uganda, before flying to Nairobi on October 3. Upon arrival, he underwent routine airport screening and was transferred to Nairobi Hospital, where he was isolated due to severe viral hemorrhagic fever symptoms.
Despite receiving supportive care, he died at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time on October 5. Laboratory tests confirmed he contracted the Bundibugyo virus, which is associated with the ongoing outbreak in the DRC.
Kenyan health authorities have initiated extensive contact tracing, identifying 28 primary contacts, including family members and healthcare workers. No onward transmission has been reported, but monitoring continues.
