Opposition Demands Action Against Killings in Nigeria

On Thursday, opposition lawmakers in Nigeria criticized the increasing scale of killings and attacks on communities, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement a sustained and coordinated security operation. The statement, signed by Hon. Fredrick Agbedi, leader of the minority caucus, and Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, minority caucus spokesperson, highlighted recent violent incidents across northern states, including Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Katsina.

In Plateau State, over 20 individuals were reported killed in recent attacks, with at least 23 victims in a single incident. In Niger State, armed men abducted more than 60 worshippers during Friday prayers.

The caucus also reported the deaths of at least 40 people in Sokoto State, including Chief Imam Aliyu, and at least 30 in an attack in Kaduna State. The lawmakers emphasized the need for an intelligence-led security response, advocating for operations that target criminal hideouts while ensuring the safety of innocent civilians.
