King Charles III Opens 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

King Charles III officially opened the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday, marking the beginning of a 10-day event featuring around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six para-sports. The opening ceremony, which was the first indoor event of its kind, took place at the Hydro arena, accommodating 14,000 spectators.

King Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, emerged from a Tardis to commence the festivities, emphasizing the dedication and talent of the athletes. The Games have undergone significant restructuring to control costs, with Glasgow stepping in as host after Victoria withdrew due to rising expenses.

The current event is being held at a quarter of the cost compared to the previous Games in Birmingham, with the sporting program nearly halved from 19 sports. The para-sport program is the largest ever at the Commonwealth Games, including athletics, swimming, and wheelchair basketball.

Notable attendees included UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney.
