Kogi Assembly Proposes New Tenancy Law to Protect Tenants

The Kogi State House of Assembly has commenced the process to overhaul the state's tenancy law through a public hearing aimed at addressing tenant exploitation and arbitrary rent hikes. The proposed legislation, known as the Kogi State Tenancy Law 2027, is designed to replace the existing 2007 law and reflect current economic realities.

Sponsored by Lawal Aku, a member representing Ankpa State Constituency, the bill seeks to protect tenants from unlawful evictions and excessive charges by property agents. It aims to establish a fair and transparent legal framework governing landlord-tenant relationships in Kogi State.

The public hearing is part of a broader effort to promote participatory democracy, allowing stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the legislative process. Aku emphasized the importance of safeguarding the interests of both landlords and tenants, noting the need for a comprehensive legal regime to foster harmony and access to justice in tenancy matters, especially amid increasing urbanization and housing challenges in the state.
