Kwankwaso Defends Obi's Northern Support Against Sheriff

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and a member of the National Democratic Congress, dismissed Ali Modu Sheriff's assertion that Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, lacks significant political support in Northern Nigeria. In a statement posted on his official page on July 7, 2026, Kwankwaso argued that Sheriff’s comments do not reflect the political reality in the North.

He highlighted that Obi secured approximately 2.8 million votes across the region during the last presidential election, a figure he believes cannot be dismissed lightly. Kwankwaso also rejected Sheriff’s claim about Kano voters not supporting Obi, asserting that the residents of Kano are neither bigots nor xenophobes and will support a credible ticket.

He advised Sheriff to focus on the security and humanitarian challenges facing Borno State rather than making divisive political comments.
