Labor Dispute at Afam Power Station Disrupts Port Harcourt Power

Parts of Port Harcourt and its surroundings are currently facing electricity supply disruptions due to a labor-related incident at Afam IV Power Station. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the disruption began on Monday when members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Rivers State Chapter, opened the Afam–Alaoji 330kV Transmission Line 2 at the Alaoji 330kV Transmission Substation.

This action is connected to an ongoing labor dispute between NUEE and the management of Afam IV Gas Power Station. As a result, the 150MVA 330/132kV inter-bus transformer at Afam IV tripped, impacting bulk electricity transmission to various parts of Port Harcourt.

The affected facilities include the Port Harcourt Town 132kV Transmission Substation, Elelenwo 132kV Transmission Substation, and the 60MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Port Harcourt Mains 132kV Transmission Substation. TCN is working with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), to restore the affected facilities as soon as it is safe to do so and has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to consumers.
