Adeosun Critiques Whistleblowing Policy's Legal Weakness

Kemi Adeosun, who served as Nigeria's Finance Minister from 2015 to 2018, addressed the shortcomings of the country's whistleblowing policy during a keynote speech at the second edition of the Citadel School of Governance dialogue series in Lagos. She noted that the policy, introduced in December 2016 as part of the federal government's initiative to combat corruption, lacked legal backing, making it vulnerable to being easily discarded by subsequent administrations.

Adeosun emphasized that without legal support, reform initiatives often face institutional resistance, which complicates efforts to overcome obstacles in governance. She underscored the importance of building strong institutions to correct human behavior and stamp out corruption, stating that the challenges Nigeria faces are not unique to the country but are part of a global issue.

Tunde Bakare, who served as the moderator, commended Adeosun for her contributions despite the challenges she faced, including a stigma from a legal case.
