Lagos Building Collapse Death Toll Rises to Nine

The death toll from the building collapse in the Alakija area along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway has risen to nine, as confirmed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The incident occurred at approximately 11:40 AM on Thursday, prompting immediate rescue operations led by Dr.

Olufemi Okosanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA. By 5 PM on Thursday, eight bodies had been recovered, and 27 individuals were rescued alive.

An update on Friday revealed that the death toll had increased to nine, including four adults and a two-year-old baby girl. The deceased were identified for release to their families.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to conduct a structural integrity assessment of adjoining buildings and enforce compliance with building codes in the area. LASEMA reaffirmed its commitment to rapid response and urged citizens to report any distressed buildings via their toll-free line.
