SDAL Warns of Flooding Risks from Unregulated Development

Mr. Lai Omotola, the President of the Shoreline Developers Association of Lagos (SDAL), has issued a warning regarding the worsening flooding in Lagos due to continued construction on wetlands and unregulated land reclamation. He emphasized that sustainable shoreline development is essential for unlocking the state's economic potential.

Omotola stated that wetlands designated by the Lagos State Government should remain undeveloped, as they play vital ecological roles in water retention and flood control. He urged developers to prioritize environmental protection over profit, noting that failure to comply with regulations could lead to significant financial losses for homeowners and investors.

Omotola condemned indiscriminate land reclamation without proper environmental assessments, explaining that altering natural waterways can lead to flooding. He argued that responsible shoreline development could attract global investors and create jobs, citing high-value waterfront locations like Banana Island as examples of successful investments.

Omotola believes that with the right infrastructure and environmental safeguards, Lagos can generate sustainable revenue and boost tourism.
