Lagos Man Sentenced to Death for Murder of Amina

On Thursday, a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja sentenced 35-year-old Benedict Agara to death by hanging for the murder of Amina, following a dispute. Justice Modupe Nicol delivered the judgment in case no.

LD/17040C/2021, finding Agara guilty of murder contrary to Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The incident occurred on April 3, 2021, at Block 33, Flat 102, Jakande Housing Estate, where Agara allegedly stabbed Amina with a broken bottle.

The prosecution, led by Titilayo Olanrewaju and Daud Z. O.

Abdulaziz, presented six exhibits and witness testimonies, including that of investigating police officer Mariam Ibrahim. Justice Nicol ruled that the prosecution proved the essential ingredients of murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

Although there were no eyewitnesses to the stabbing, circumstantial evidence linked Agara to the crime. The court dismissed Agara's defense arguments regarding the admissibility of his confession, which was obtained without legal compliance.

Consequently, Agara was found guilty of murder.
