Lagos Traders Transform Berger Lay-by into Market Hub

The Berger lay-by in Lagos State has evolved from a temporary vehicle stopping point into a vibrant market where traders sell food, drinks, clothing, and phone accessories. This transformation has created job opportunities for traders like Kingsley Ifeanyi, who has been selling ice cream and snacks for nine years, earning around N20,000 on good days, although sales have declined during the rainy season.

Another unnamed trader, selling snacks and fast food for over four years, estimates earnings between N5,000 and N10,000 daily, citing reduced cash flow as a reason for declining sales. Morenikeji Olanrewaju, a trader since 2022, expressed concerns about enforcement from the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline Brigade, which disrupts their operations.

She noted that goods sold at the lay-by are cheaper than those in supermarkets, attracting more customers. The traders face challenges from enforcement actions while providing convenient access to goods for commuters.
