LASTMA Warns Residents Against Contaminated Oil Collection

On October 15, residents of Lagos State rushed to collect groundnut oil from a fallen tanker that crashed near Abiola Garden on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, carrying 33,000 litres of oil. The incident disrupted traffic flow and raised concerns about public health.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) warned residents against consuming or selling the scooped oil, stating it had been contaminated by dirt, road pollutants, and substances from drainage channels. LASTMA's general manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the safety of the oil and urged residents not to take it home for cooking or sell it to others.
Preliminary security reports indicated that brake failure might have caused the tanker to overturn. LASTMA deployed its rescue and recovery team, along with two heavy-duty tow vehicles, to remove the tanker and clear the road.
Other agencies, including the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps, also responded to the incident.
