Lagos Emergency Services Avert Ethanol Disaster at Bridge

A significant incident occurred when a FOTON truck carrying 33,000 litres of ethanol fell at the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State. Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that no casualties were reported.
The truck fell while the driver was negotiating a turn, with preliminary investigations indicating that speeding caused the truck’s turntable to detach, blocking the roundabout. Recognizing the volatile nature of ethanol, the Eagle Response Team, alongside other responders, cordoned off the area and implemented crowd and traffic control measures.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service used chemical foam to suppress fumes and mitigate the risk of fire or explosion. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted in securing the scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu praised the coordinated efforts that averted a major disaster and urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations.
