LAWMA to Install Cameras in Lagos to Combat Waste Dumping

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to deploy surveillance cameras at strategic locations throughout Lagos State to combat illegal waste dumping. This initiative was announced by Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, during an interview on Lagos Talks 91.3 FM.
The authority is collaborating with the Lagos State Command Centre to monitor environmental violations. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve environmental sanitation through technology, enforcement, and public awareness.
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that enhancing waste collection infrastructure alone is insufficient for a cleaner Lagos, highlighting the need to change public behavior and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Additionally, LAWMA is introducing 150 new waste trucks to improve waste collection and is implementing house-to-house interventions to clear accumulated waste.
The authority is also advancing plans for a biogas plant and waste-to-energy solutions to reduce reliance on conventional waste disposal methods.
