Lawyer Advocates for DSS-like Compensation Policy

Lawyer Dantani has called on Nigerian security agencies to implement a compensation policy akin to that introduced by the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi. This policy compensates victims of wrongful arrests and operational errors, which Dantani describes as a significant step towards enhancing accountability in Nigeria's security framework.

He emphasized that security agencies have constitutional, legal, and moral obligations to rectify violations of citizens' rights. Citing specific cases, he mentioned that Nura Idris received ₦3 million after being wrongfully linked to Boko Haram, and Chineze Ozoadibe was awarded ₦10 million for her wrongful arrest over oil bunkering allegations.

Additionally, a Sokoto trader received ₦20 million for injuries sustained during a security operation. Dantani urged other agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army, to adopt similar compensation mechanisms and reform practices to reduce wrongful arrests.
