Lekki Scrabble Classics Launches U-12 Category for 2026

The 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics, scheduled for September 26 to 27, will feature a new U-12 category aimed at children under 12. This initiative, introduced by the Lekki Scrabble Club, seeks to create an early pathway for young players to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.

The tournament will offer a top prize of $1,000 and marks the first time a dedicated section for minors will be included, as the event has traditionally been dominated by more experienced players. President Samuel Anikoh stated that early exposure to competitive Scrabble could help identify and nurture future champions for Nigeria.

He cited defending champion Abdulmumeen Jimoh as an example of the benefits of starting young, as Jimoh has become a dominant figure in Nigerian Scrabble after beginning his journey at an early age. Anikoh emphasized that this initiative builds on their school Scrabble program and provides a platform for young players to experience competitive Scrabble alongside established players.
