Libya's Rival Governments Set Elections Timeline Agreement

Representatives from Libya's eastern and western authorities, known as the 4+4 Committee, signed an agreement on a timeline for elections on Sunday, following months of United Nations-backed negotiations. The agreement aims to restructure Libya's electoral commission and address disagreements over electoral laws.

Moussa Al-Koni, Vice-President of the Libyan Presidential Council, stated that this agreement could facilitate the end of the country's political division. Abdul Rahman Al-Abbar, a member of the 4+4 Committee representing the eastern administration, also expressed support for the agreement.

Libya has been in turmoil since the overthrow of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, resulting in a split between two governments: the internationally recognized Government of National Unity led by Abdulhamid Dbeibah in the west and the rival Government of National Stability led by Khalifa Haftar in the east. Reunification talks reportedly began late last year after both sides requested mediation from Pakistan.
