Nigeria Launches National Strategy Against Newcastle Disease

On August 4, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD), in collaboration with the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicine (GALVmed), inaugurated the National Technical Working Group (NTWG) on Newcastle Disease in Abuja. This initiative marks a significant step in Nigeria's efforts to enhance poultry health, food security, and the livelihoods of poultry farmers.

The Permanent Secretary, Dr Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, represented by Dr Adedoyin Adeniyi Mni, emphasized that this is the first coordinated national effort to address Newcastle disease through a structured approach. The NTWG will create a comprehensive National Newcastle Disease Strategic Plan focusing on prevention, surveillance, vaccination, and biosecurity.

Dr Akujobi highlighted the need for improved cross-border collaboration and veterinary services. The strategic plan will also prioritize local vaccine production and training for vaccine delivery personnel.

The Ministry is committed to strengthening animal disease control through better funding and collaboration with international partners.
