New Leadership at Maryam Abacha American University

Prof. Ibrahim A. Lawal has been appointed as the new President of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN), Maradi, by the founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo.

This appointment, effective from a ceremony held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, marks a leadership transition at the university, which was established approximately 13 years ago. Gwarzo, who has served as President since its inception, stated that this change is part of efforts to enhance the university's development and allow more academic community members to contribute.

He expressed confidence that institutions under the MAAUN Group could eventually produce a Nigerian President. Gwarzo acknowledged the challenges faced in establishing and managing universities but noted that determination and faith had helped overcome them.

He described Prof. Lawal as a “double professor” affiliated with both MAAUN Niger and Bayero University, Kano, and wished him a successful tenure. The ceremony also featured remarks from Idris Muhammad Gobir, the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State and an alumnus of MAAUN Niger.
