VC Arogundade Advocates for Kidney Care in Nigeria

Prof. Fatiu Arogundade, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Abeokuta, Ogun State, addressed the significant health burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Nigeria during his inaugural lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State. He highlighted that CKD affects a fifth of the population, particularly impacting those in their economically productive years.

Arogundade advocated for the incorporation of kidney care into Nigeria's primary health care program, recommending early detection screenings for children at all educational levels. He emphasized the importance of improving public knowledge about kidney health and suggested measures such as education, screening, and treatment for related conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Arogundade also called for a national kidney care policy to ensure equitable access to life-saving procedures like dialysis and transplantation for all Nigerians, regardless of socioeconomic status.
