Man Sets Mother on Fire Over Witchcraft Accusation

On Friday, August 14, 2026, in Ojuah, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Emmanuel Etim allegedly set his mother, Mrs Atim Eyo, on fire after accusing her of causing the death of his daughter through witchcraft. Eyewitnesses reported that Etim arrived at his mother's residence with about four litres of fuel and a lighter, confronting her about the death of his daughter, which occurred earlier that day.

The situation escalated when Etim attempted to strangle his mother, who managed to break free but was subsequently doused in fuel and set ablaze. Neighbours intervened, extinguishing the flames and taking Mrs Eyo to a hospital for medical treatment.

The Cross River State Police Command, represented by spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts are underway to apprehend Etim, who is currently at large, to face the allegations against him.
