Man Returning for Wedding Beaten to Death in Lagos

Basit, who had recently returned to Nigeria from abroad in preparation for his wedding scheduled in roughly two weeks, was involved in a fatal incident on Wednesday night, September 2, 2026. While driving along Freeman Street in the Patey area of Lagos Island, his vehicle struck a male pedestrian attempting to cross the road.

Instead of stopping, Basit drove off, which incited a mob of angry residents to pursue him. Witness Afolabi Lawal reported that the mob used sticks and bottles to beat Basit, striking him repeatedly on the head.

After realizing he had lost consciousness, the mob fled the scene. Following the incident, a police source confirmed that several individuals have been taken into custody regarding the killing.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi were unsuccessful, as her calls and messages went unanswered.
