World Athletics to Launch Marathon Championship in 2030

World Athletics, led by President Lord Sebastian Coe, has announced plans to launch a standalone World Marathon Championship in 2030, with Athens, Greece, being considered as the inaugural host. This new championship will alternate annually between men's and women's events.

The marathon will continue to be included in the World Athletics Championships scheduled for 2027 and 2029. The proposed championship aims to honor the heritage of the marathon and celebrate its significance within the global running community.

The last iteration of the event was held in London in 2031, which was a successful bid for hosting the championship three years prior. The new annual road running championship will be distinct from the biennial competitions, ensuring that the marathon tradition is preserved and celebrated on a dedicated global platform.
