NiDCOM Mourns Maryam Murtala, Diaspora Leader

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Maryam Murtala, a Canada-based Nigerian lawyer and community leader, who significantly contributed to the first Nigerian Diaspora Economic Conference held in Canada in August. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, described Murtala as a “rare gem” and emphasized that her efforts were crucial to the conference's success.

Murtala was the founder and CEO of Canada Vendors, which promoted Nigerian businesses in Canada, and served as the Public Relations Director of the Network of Nigerians in Canada (NNC). Dabiri-Erewa noted that Murtala ensured the representation of vendors, women, and small business owners during the event.

She characterized Murtala as a builder of people and a bridge between Nigeria and Canada, highlighting her belief in the diaspora's responsibility to contribute to their communities. NiDCOM extended condolences to Murtala’s family and the Nigerian community in Canada, praying for her legacy to endure.
