Kano Families Face Hardship Ahead of Mawlid Holiday

As Mawlid approaches, families in Kano, Nigeria, are experiencing significant financial strain, affecting their ability to celebrate the holiday traditionally. The Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday for Muslims to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid.

However, many families are struggling to afford basic necessities, with Musa Ibrahim, a local father, stating he only has N1,000 to support his family and is uncertain about purchasing a chicken for the celebration. Chicken seller Sagir Ya’u reported a drastic drop in sales, with customers opting for smaller, cheaper chickens due to financial constraints.

He noted that only 15 out of over 100 chickens were sold, compared to previous years when sales were much higher. Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Chairman of the Kano State Council of Ulama, acknowledged the financial pressures faced by families, exacerbated this year by broader economic hardships.

He urged Muslims to continue observing Mawlid despite these challenges.
