Memoir Launch Highlights Nigeria's Textile Industry Collapse

Lawrencia Mallam, a former Minister of Environment, launched her memoir titled "Need to Chronicle," which focuses on the decline of Nigeria's textile industry. During the event held in Lagos, she lamented the industry's collapse, particularly in Kaduna State, which was once a major industrial hub.

Mallam pointed out that only five major textile companies remain active in Kaduna, with no cotton production sustaining the industry. She identified poor infrastructure, especially erratic electricity supply, as a critical factor undermining growth and insisted that without stable power, the industry cannot be revived.

Mallam noted Nigeria's lost status as a leading textile producer in Africa, now overshadowed by China. She argued that reviving the sector would directly impact unemployment and insecurity, which are pressing issues in the nation.

The event also featured Prof. Olufemi Lawal from Lagos State University, who described the memoir as an important historical account of the textile industry's decline and called for urgent government reforms to restore the sector.
