Nigeria's Military Strategy Targets Terrorist Funding Sources

General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.), the Minister of Defence, stated that the military's updated strategy aims to choke the logistical and financial support for asymmetric warfare in Nigeria. He declared that the era of bold terrorist attacks on communities and military formations is over, as the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with partner intelligence agencies, have disrupted major terrorist networks, including Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Musa indicated that the conflict has transitioned from organized insurgency to isolated criminal cells. He cautioned villagers against aiding terrorists, as such actions prolong the insurgency.

The minister noted that aggressive military operations have significantly weakened the capacity of these groups to conduct large-scale attacks. He also linked recent spikes in insecurity to upcoming political campaigns, suggesting they might be exploited by political actors.

Musa revealed that the military is working with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to track illicit funding networks and is employing advanced international counter-funding tools following discussions with the United States State Department.
