Military Pay Reform Essential for Nigeria's Stability

Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, stated that military pay reform is essential for national stability and security in Nigeria. He highlighted that the current military pay structure is inadequate and proposed reforms for 2026 that would significantly increase salaries across various ranks.

For instance, entry-level salaries would rise from approximately 130,000 Naira to 300,000 Naira, with corporals earning 400,000 Naira, sergeants 510,000 Naira, and senior officers like Brigadier Generals projected to earn between 1.5 million and 3.6 million Naira monthly. Matawalle noted that improved pay would enhance the welfare of military personnel, boost morale, and help retain experienced officers who are leaving for better-paying opportunities in the private sector.

He stressed that better remuneration is vital for maintaining operational efficiency and national defense, recognizing the sacrifices made by those in uniform.
