17 JAS Family Members Surrender to Military in Borno

On August 4, 2023, seventeen family members of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) voluntarily surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Borno State. The surrender occurred in separate incidents, with sixteen individuals—10 women and six children—approaching troops of the 222 Battalion during a patrol in Konduga Local Government Area.

They cited sustained military bombardment and ground offensives against insurgent hideouts as their reasons for abandoning the group. During the surrender, troops recovered ₦92,000 from the group.

Additionally, an 11-year-old linked to the terrorist group surrendered to troops of the 202 Battalion in Bama Local Government Area on the same day, also attributing the decision to military pressure. The surrendered individuals are undergoing profiling and debriefing before being transferred to appropriate authorities for rehabilitation.

Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, stated that military operations would continue until terrorist enclaves are dismantled.
