Minority Caucus Demands $5bn Security Intervention

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize a $5 billion security intervention from the nation’s external reserves to combat the increasing terrorism, banditry, and mass abductions in Northern Nigeria. In a statement on Thursday, signed by Leader Hon. Fredrick Agbedi and spokesperson Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the caucus highlighted the urgent need for coordinated government action due to the alarming scale of violence in states such as Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Katsina.

They referenced specific incidents, including the killing of over 20 individuals in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, the abduction of more than 60 worshippers in Niger State, and the deaths of at least 40 people in Sokoto State. The lawmakers called for an intelligence-led security operation to reclaim territories controlled by terrorists and bandits, emphasizing the need for sustained military presence in affected areas.

They also urged President Tinubu to engage directly with communities in Zamfara State and Illela to address the insecurity.
