Tinubu's EFCC Directive Criticized as Afterthought

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives accused President Bola Tinubu of issuing a “panicky and belated afterthought” directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) concerning the freezing of Osun State Government’s accounts. The lawmakers claimed this action revealed contradictions within the APC-led federal government and was an attempt to intimidate the Osun State Government ahead of the upcoming governorship election.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Hon. Fredrick Agbedi and Caucus spokesman Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, they asserted that Tinubu's directive to the EFCC to withdraw the freezing order came only after significant public backlash. They argued that the directive was not a genuine commitment to the rule of law but rather a response to public outcry.

The Caucus pointed out contradictions between statements from the President and the EFCC, particularly noting that EFCC spokesman Mr. Wilson Uwujaren stated the freezing occurred “without a valid court order,” while Tinubu later directed the EFCC to seek a court order to vacate the freeze.
